The contrast between platforms and protocols is similar to the one between proprietary tech and other general web standards like RSS. This article by Michael Mignano about "The Standards Innovation Paradox" https://every.to/p/the-standards-innovation-paradox seems relevant.
do you think enough incentives can be created for de-centralized compute infrastructure (Web3 equivalent of AWS, Azure) required to support the web3 applications at large scale
For industries dominated by pipeline companies, such as the food supply chain and grocery stores, do you think they can shift straight from pipelines to protocols, or do you need the intermediary step of a platform?
Great article. Can't wait for insights into web3 business models which really is the big headache, not only for the organisations and contributors to decentralised/p2p platforms but also downstream models. It's hard to imagine p2p equivalents of twitter/instagram having ads which raises a huge question as to how marketing will evolve.
pipeline model; benefit from supply-side economies of scale
platform model; benefit from demand-side economies of scale
what is the equivalent for protocol model, if any?
Still demand side economies of scale. Except that now you get these economies in infrastructure creation as well, not just in market activity.
